Recognizing the Signs of Opioid Addiction: What Arleta Families Should Know

By Clarity Springs Wellness Advisors  |  February 8, 2026

The opioid crisis has evolved into one of the most devastating public health emergencies in American history, and communities across California have felt its impact deeply. In Arleta and throughout the San Fernando Valley, families are grappling with the reality that opioid addiction can affect anyone, regardless of age, background, or socioeconomic status. At Clarity Springs Wellness Advisors, located at 10433 Laurel Canyon Blvd in Arleta, CA, our clinical team works with families every day who wish they had recognized the signs sooner. This article is designed to help Arleta families identify the warning signs of opioid addiction and understand what steps to take when they suspect a loved one is struggling.

Understanding the Scope of the Opioid Crisis in California

California has been among the states hardest hit by the opioid epidemic. Opioids include prescription painkillers such as oxycodone, hydrocodone, and morphine, as well as illicit substances like heroin and synthetic opioids including fentanyl. What often begins as legitimate pain management following surgery or injury can gradually develop into physical dependence and, ultimately, addiction. In Los Angeles County, opioid-related overdose deaths have risen significantly over the past decade, with fentanyl playing an increasingly prominent role. For families in Arleta and surrounding neighborhoods like Pacoima, Sun Valley, and Panorama City, understanding this landscape is the first step toward protecting loved ones.

Physical Warning Signs

Opioid addiction manifests through a range of physical symptoms that families should watch for carefully. These signs may develop gradually, making them easy to overlook at first, but they tend to become more pronounced as the addiction progresses.

  • Constricted (pinpoint) pupils — One of the most telltale signs of opioid use is noticeably small pupils, even in dim lighting conditions.
  • Drowsiness and nodding off — Individuals under the influence of opioids may appear excessively sleepy, falling asleep at inappropriate times during conversations or meals.
  • Changes in sleep patterns — Alternating between periods of insomnia and extended sleeping can indicate substance use.
  • Unexplained weight loss — Opioids suppress appetite, and users frequently lose weight without any intentional dietary changes.
  • Flu-like symptoms when not using — Withdrawal from opioids produces symptoms that closely resemble a severe flu, including nausea, vomiting, sweating, muscle aches, and diarrhea.
  • Track marks or skin infections — For those who inject opioids, marks on the arms, hands, or feet, along with abscesses or infections, may be visible.
  • Slurred speech and impaired coordination — Difficulty speaking clearly or maintaining balance may indicate intoxication.

Behavioral and Psychological Red Flags

Beyond physical symptoms, opioid addiction creates significant changes in behavior and emotional patterns. Families in Arleta should pay attention to the following warning signs:

  • Social withdrawal — Pulling away from family gatherings, longtime friends, and activities that once brought enjoyment.
  • Secrecy and dishonesty — Becoming increasingly evasive about whereabouts, phone calls, and daily activities. Lying about finances or unexplained spending.
  • Doctor shopping — Visiting multiple physicians to obtain prescriptions for painkillers, or expressing anger when a doctor refuses to prescribe opioids.
  • Neglecting responsibilities — Declining performance at work or school, missing important commitments, and abandoning household duties.
  • Mood swings and irritability — Dramatic shifts between euphoria and agitation, particularly when the drug is wearing off or unavailable.
  • Financial difficulties — Unexplained need for money, borrowing from family, selling possessions, or stealing to fund the addiction.
  • Loss of interest — Hobbies, career goals, and personal passions are abandoned as the addiction consumes more of the individual's time and energy.

What to Do If You Recognize These Signs

If you believe a family member or loved one in Arleta is struggling with opioid addiction, it is important to approach the situation with compassion rather than judgment. Addiction is a medical condition, not a moral failing, and your loved one needs support and professional treatment to recover.

The first step is to educate yourself about addiction and treatment options. Clarity Springs Wellness Advisors offers a comprehensive continuum of care specifically designed to address opioid addiction, starting with medically-supervised detoxification. Our medical detox program provides 24/7 monitoring by board-certified physicians and registered nurses who manage withdrawal symptoms using evidence-based medication-assisted treatment (MAT) protocols. Medications such as buprenorphine and naltrexone can significantly reduce cravings and withdrawal discomfort, making the detox process safer and more comfortable.

Following detox, our residential treatment program at our Arleta campus provides the structured, immersive environment that many individuals need during early recovery. Over the course of 30, 60, or 90 days, patients engage in individual therapy using modalities like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), group counseling, family therapy sessions, and holistic programming. For those who need to maintain work or family obligations, our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) offers flexible scheduling while still providing rigorous clinical support.

Starting the Conversation

Approaching a loved one about their addiction is never easy. Choose a private, calm moment when the individual is sober. Express your concerns using "I" statements, such as "I have noticed changes that worry me" rather than accusatory language. Offer specific examples of behaviors you have observed, and let them know that treatment is available and that you will support them through the process.

If you are an Arleta family in need of guidance, the admissions team at Clarity Springs Wellness Advisors is available 24/7 at (209) 209-6593. We offer free, confidential consultations and can help you understand your options, verify insurance coverage, and develop a plan to get your loved one the help they need. Recovery is possible, and it starts with recognizing the signs and taking that first courageous step.

Recovery Tips

5 Evidence-Based Tips for Early Recovery from Clarity Springs Experts

By Clarity Springs Wellness Advisors  |  February 3, 2026

The early weeks and months of sobriety are widely regarded as the most critical period in the recovery process. It is during this time that the foundation for long-term success is either established or undermined. At Clarity Springs Wellness Advisors in Arleta, California, our clinical team has guided thousands of individuals through this pivotal phase, and we have identified five evidence-based strategies that consistently contribute to stronger, more sustainable recoveries. Whether you are preparing to leave our residential treatment program, currently enrolled in our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), or supporting a loved one who is newly sober, these research-backed tips can make a meaningful difference.

Therapy session environment at Clarity Springs Wellness Advisors treatment center

1. Build a Structured Daily Routine

Research published in the Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment consistently demonstrates that individuals who maintain a structured daily routine during early recovery experience significantly lower relapse rates. During active addiction, life often revolves around obtaining, using, and recovering from substances. When that cycle is broken through treatment, the resulting void can feel overwhelming. Without structure, boredom and idle time become dangerous triggers.

At Clarity Springs Wellness Advisors, our residential treatment program at 10433 Laurel Canyon Blvd in Arleta is built around a carefully designed daily schedule. Patients participate in individual therapy sessions, group counseling, psychoeducation classes, meals, physical activity, and holistic programming at consistent times each day. This structure is intentional. It teaches the brain to associate daily rhythms with recovery-oriented activities rather than substance use.

When transitioning home after completing treatment, we encourage clients to replicate this structure. Wake at the same time each morning. Schedule therapy appointments, support group meetings, exercise, meals, and leisure activities in a written planner. Include dedicated time for mindfulness or meditation, which has been shown to reduce stress and cravings. The predictability of a routine provides a sense of control and purpose during a time when everything feels unfamiliar.

2. Engage in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) Consistently

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is one of the most extensively researched and effective treatment modalities for substance use disorders. CBT works by helping individuals identify the distorted thought patterns and beliefs that drive addictive behavior and replace them with healthier, more accurate ways of thinking. At Clarity Springs Wellness Advisors, CBT is a cornerstone of both our residential and outpatient programs.

During early recovery, the mind is particularly vulnerable to cognitive distortions such as catastrophizing, all-or-nothing thinking, and minimization. A person might think, "I had one bad day, so my entire recovery is ruined," or "I can have just one drink and stop." CBT provides concrete tools to challenge these thoughts before they lead to relapse. The key is consistency. Research shows that the benefits of CBT are cumulative, meaning regular engagement in therapy sessions produces better outcomes over time. We recommend continuing CBT through our IOP or Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) for at least 90 days following residential treatment.

3. Prioritize Physical Health and Exercise

The connection between physical exercise and recovery from addiction is supported by a growing body of scientific evidence. Studies published in Frontiers in Psychiatry have shown that regular aerobic exercise reduces cravings, improves mood, decreases anxiety and depression symptoms, and enhances sleep quality, all factors that are critical during early recovery.

Exercise triggers the release of endorphins and dopamine, the same neurotransmitters that substances of abuse artificially stimulate. By engaging in regular physical activity, individuals in early recovery can begin to restore the brain's natural reward system, which has been disrupted by addiction. At our Arleta treatment center, patients have access to a fitness center, yoga classes, and guided outdoor activities as part of their treatment plan.

You do not need to become a marathon runner. Start with 30 minutes of moderate exercise three to five times per week. Walking, swimming, cycling, and yoga are all excellent options. The goal is consistency rather than intensity. As your body heals and your fitness improves, you can gradually increase the duration and difficulty of your workouts.

4. Develop a Relapse Prevention Plan

Having a written relapse prevention plan is one of the most effective tools for maintaining sobriety during early recovery. This is not simply a list of things to avoid. A comprehensive relapse prevention plan is a living document that identifies personal triggers, warning signs, coping strategies, and emergency contacts.

At Clarity Springs Wellness Advisors, every patient works with their primary therapist to develop a personalized relapse prevention plan before discharge. This plan typically includes identification of high-risk situations such as specific people, places, emotions, and times of day that are associated with past substance use. It outlines specific coping strategies for each trigger, such as calling a sponsor, practicing a DBT distress tolerance skill, or attending a support group meeting. It also includes a crisis plan with emergency contacts, including our aftercare team at (209) 209-6593.

We teach our patients that relapse is a process, not an event. It typically begins with emotional and mental relapse long before any substance is consumed. By recognizing the early warning signs, such as isolation, romanticizing past use, skipping therapy sessions, or neglecting self-care, individuals can intervene before a full relapse occurs.

5. Invest in Sober Social Connections

Humans are social beings, and recovery cannot happen in isolation. Research from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) consistently identifies social support as one of the strongest predictors of sustained recovery. However, many individuals in early recovery discover that their former social circles were centered around substance use. Rebuilding a healthy social network is essential.

Clarity Springs Wellness Advisors offers a robust alumni program that connects graduates of our treatment programs with a supportive community of individuals who understand the recovery journey firsthand. Alumni events, peer support groups, and community activities provide safe, substance-free environments to form new friendships and strengthen accountability.

In addition to our alumni network, we encourage patients to attend community-based support groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Narcotics Anonymous (NA), or SMART Recovery meetings in the Arleta and greater Los Angeles area. These groups provide ongoing peer support, mentorship through sponsorship, and a sense of belonging that is invaluable during early recovery.

Moving Forward with Confidence

Early recovery is challenging, but it is also a time of tremendous growth and possibility. By implementing these five evidence-based strategies, building structure, engaging in CBT, prioritizing physical health, developing a relapse prevention plan, and investing in sober connections, you give yourself the strongest possible foundation for lasting sobriety. If you or a loved one is seeking addiction treatment, Clarity Springs Wellness Advisors in Arleta, California is here to help. Contact our admissions team at (209) 209-6593 to learn about our detox, residential, and outpatient programs.

Family Support

How to Support a Loved One Struggling with Addiction in California

By Clarity Springs Wellness Advisors  |  January 27, 2026

Addiction does not only affect the individual who is struggling. It sends ripples through every relationship, every household, and every family unit it touches. Across California, millions of families are navigating the painful reality of watching someone they love battle a substance use disorder. If you find yourself in this position, know that you are not alone, and know that your response can profoundly influence your loved one's willingness to seek help. At Clarity Springs Wellness Advisors in Arleta, California, we work closely with families because we understand that recovery is most effective when it occurs within the context of supportive, informed relationships.

Family therapy and support programs at Clarity Springs Wellness Advisors

Understanding Addiction as a Medical Condition

The first and most important step in supporting a loved one with addiction is to understand that addiction is a chronic, relapsing brain disease, not a character flaw, a moral failure, or a choice. The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) defines addiction as a treatable, chronic medical disease involving complex interactions among brain circuits, genetics, the environment, and an individual's life experiences. This understanding is critical because it shifts the conversation from blame and shame to compassion and treatment.

In California, substance use disorders affect every demographic. From the affluent neighborhoods of Beverly Hills to working-class communities in the San Fernando Valley, addiction does not discriminate. Whether your loved one is struggling with alcohol, opioids, methamphetamine, benzodiazepines, or cocaine, the underlying disease mechanism is similar, and effective treatment is available.

What Not to Do: Avoiding Common Mistakes

Many well-intentioned family members inadvertently engage in behaviors that can worsen the situation or delay their loved one's entry into treatment. Understanding these pitfalls is essential:

  • Do not enable — Enabling occurs when family members shield the individual from the natural consequences of their addiction. This can include covering for absences at work, paying bills, making excuses to other family members, or bailing them out of legal trouble. While these actions come from a place of love, they ultimately remove the motivation to seek help.
  • Do not use shame or guilt — Statements like "How could you do this to our family?" or "If you really loved us, you would stop" are counterproductive. Shame drives individuals deeper into substance use as a coping mechanism.
  • Do not issue ultimatums you will not follow through on — Empty threats erode trust and credibility. If you set a boundary, you must be prepared to uphold it.
  • Do not try to control their behavior — You cannot force someone into sobriety by monitoring their every move, disposing of their substances, or locking them in the house. Control tactics breed resentment and rarely produce lasting change.

Effective Strategies for Supporting Recovery

There are, however, many constructive actions that family members can take to encourage a loved one toward treatment and support their recovery journey once it begins:

Educate yourself about addiction and treatment. Knowledge is empowering. Learn about the substances your loved one is using, the progression of addiction, and the treatment options available in California. Clarity Springs Wellness Advisors offers family education workshops as part of our treatment programming, covering topics such as the neuroscience of addiction, enabling versus supporting, boundary setting, and navigating the treatment system.

Have a compassionate, honest conversation. Choose a time when your loved one is sober and you are calm. Express your concerns using specific observations and "I" statements. For example, "I have noticed you have been missing work and seem withdrawn. I am worried about your health." Avoid generalizations and accusations. Let them know that treatment is available and that you want to help, not punish.

Research treatment options in advance. Before having the conversation, research treatment centers so that you are prepared with concrete next steps if your loved one expresses willingness to get help. Clarity Springs Wellness Advisors in Arleta offers a full continuum of care, including medical detoxification, residential treatment for 30, 60, or 90 days, Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP), and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP). Our admissions team is available 24/7 at (209) 209-6593 to answer questions, verify insurance, and facilitate same-day admissions when possible.

Consider a professional intervention. If direct conversations have not been successful, a professionally guided intervention can be an effective next step. Licensed interventionists help families prepare and deliver their message in a structured, compassionate setting that maximizes the likelihood of treatment acceptance. Our team at Clarity Springs can connect you with intervention professionals in the greater Los Angeles area.

Participating in Family Therapy

At Clarity Springs Wellness Advisors, family involvement is not optional, it is a core component of our treatment philosophy. Addiction damages family systems, eroding trust, communication, and emotional safety. Our family therapy program, integrated into both our residential and outpatient tracks, addresses these wounds directly.

During family therapy sessions at our Arleta campus, a licensed marriage and family therapist guides the family unit through structured exercises designed to rebuild communication, establish healthy boundaries, process grief and anger, and develop a shared understanding of the recovery process. Families learn to distinguish between supporting and enabling, manage their own emotional health, and prepare for the challenges that arise during the transition home.

Taking Care of Yourself

Supporting someone through addiction recovery is emotionally exhausting. Families in California have access to numerous support resources, including Al-Anon meetings, Nar-Anon meetings, and therapists who specialize in family systems impacted by addiction. Clarity Springs Wellness Advisors also offers a dedicated family support group that meets weekly, providing a safe space for family members to share experiences and receive guidance from clinical professionals.

Remember that you cannot pour from an empty cup. Prioritize your own physical and mental health. Set boundaries that protect your well-being. And reach out for help when you need it. The admissions and family services team at Clarity Springs Wellness Advisors is available at (209) 209-6593 to provide guidance, resources, and compassionate support for the entire family.

Understanding Dual Diagnosis Treatment at Clarity Springs Wellness Advisors

By Clarity Springs Wellness Advisors  |  January 20, 2026

For decades, mental health treatment and addiction treatment existed in separate silos. Patients struggling with both conditions were often shuffled between providers, receiving fragmented care that addressed one disorder while neglecting the other. The result was predictable: high relapse rates, revolving-door treatment experiences, and deepening despair. At Clarity Springs Wellness Advisors in Arleta, California, we take a fundamentally different approach. Our dual diagnosis treatment program is built on the understanding that substance use disorders and mental health conditions are deeply interconnected, and treating them simultaneously is not just beneficial, it is essential.

Dual diagnosis treatment and mental health care at Clarity Springs Wellness Advisors

What Is Dual Diagnosis?

Dual diagnosis, also known as co-occurring disorders, refers to the simultaneous presence of a substance use disorder and one or more mental health conditions. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), approximately 9.2 million adults in the United States experience co-occurring disorders. This number represents nearly half of all individuals with substance use disorders, making dual diagnosis far more common than many people realize.

The most frequently observed co-occurring combinations at our Arleta treatment center include:

  • Alcohol use disorder and depression — Individuals often use alcohol to self-medicate feelings of hopelessness and sadness, creating a cyclical pattern where drinking worsens depressive symptoms and depression drives further drinking.
  • Opioid addiction and anxiety disorders — Opioids produce powerful calming effects that temporarily relieve anxiety, making them particularly addictive for individuals with generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety, or panic disorder.
  • Stimulant use and bipolar disorder — Methamphetamine and cocaine can mimic or trigger manic episodes, and individuals with bipolar disorder may use stimulants during depressive episodes to elevate their mood.
  • Benzodiazepine dependence and PTSD — Benzodiazepines are sometimes prescribed for PTSD-related anxiety, but dependence can develop rapidly, creating a secondary substance use disorder.
  • Polysubstance use and personality disorders — Borderline personality disorder, in particular, is frequently associated with impulsive substance use as a means of managing intense emotional states.

Why Integrated Treatment Matters

When substance use disorders and mental health conditions co-occur, they feed off each other in a vicious cycle. Untreated depression, anxiety, PTSD, or bipolar disorder creates emotional pain that drives substance use. Substance use, in turn, disrupts brain chemistry in ways that worsen mental health symptoms. Treating only one condition while leaving the other unaddressed is like patching one hole in a sinking boat while ignoring the other. Eventually, the untreated condition will undermine any progress that has been made.

At Clarity Springs Wellness Advisors, our integrated dual diagnosis program treats both conditions simultaneously through a single, coordinated treatment plan. This approach has been shown by research to produce significantly better outcomes than sequential or parallel treatment models. Patients are less likely to relapse, more likely to complete treatment, and more likely to achieve sustained recovery.

Our Dual Diagnosis Treatment Approach

The dual diagnosis program at our Arleta campus begins with a comprehensive biopsychosocial assessment conducted by our multidisciplinary clinical team, which includes addiction psychiatrists, licensed clinical psychologists, marriage and family therapists, and certified addiction counselors. This thorough evaluation identifies all co-occurring conditions, assesses severity, and informs the development of an individualized treatment plan.

Psychiatric evaluation and medication management: Our board-certified addiction psychiatrist evaluates each patient for co-occurring mental health conditions and develops a medication management plan when clinically appropriate. Medications such as antidepressants (SSRIs, SNRIs), mood stabilizers, anti-anxiety medications, and medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for substance use disorders are prescribed and monitored throughout the treatment process. Medication adjustments are made as needed based on clinical progress.

Evidence-based psychotherapy: Individual therapy is the backbone of our dual diagnosis program. Patients meet with a licensed therapist multiple times per week for sessions utilizing evidence-based modalities including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which addresses the distorted thought patterns that drive both addiction and mental health symptoms; Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), which teaches emotional regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and interpersonal effectiveness skills; Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) for patients with trauma histories; and Motivational Interviewing to strengthen the individual's internal motivation for change.

Group therapy: Our group therapy program includes both addiction-focused and mental health-focused groups. Psychoeducation groups teach patients about the neuroscience of addiction, the connection between mental health and substance use, relapse prevention skills, and coping strategies. Process groups provide a supportive environment where patients share their experiences and receive feedback from peers and clinicians.

Holistic therapies: To complement clinical treatment, our dual diagnosis program incorporates holistic modalities such as yoga therapy, mindfulness meditation, art therapy, music therapy, and guided journaling. These practices promote emotional regulation, stress reduction, and self-awareness, which are all critical skills for managing co-occurring disorders.

The Treatment Continuum for Dual Diagnosis

Effective dual diagnosis treatment requires an adequate duration and a step-down approach that gradually transitions patients to less intensive levels of care. At Clarity Springs Wellness Advisors, the typical dual diagnosis treatment pathway begins with medical detoxification, where substances are safely cleared from the body under 24/7 medical supervision. This is followed by residential treatment lasting 30 to 90 days, where the most intensive therapeutic work occurs in our structured inpatient environment.

As patients stabilize and develop stronger coping skills, they step down to our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), which provides five to six hours of daily programming while allowing patients to reside at home or in a sober living environment. The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) follows, meeting three to four times per week in the evenings to allow patients to maintain work and family responsibilities. Finally, our aftercare program provides ongoing support through individual therapy, alumni groups, and peer support.

When to Seek Dual Diagnosis Treatment

If you or a loved one has experienced repeated relapses despite treatment, if you have been diagnosed with a mental health condition and have been using substances to cope, or if you have noticed that your mental health symptoms worsen during periods of substance use and improve during sobriety, dual diagnosis treatment may be appropriate. The clinical team at Clarity Springs Wellness Advisors in Arleta, California is available to conduct a comprehensive assessment and determine the most appropriate level of care. Call us at (209) 209-6593 for a confidential consultation.

Clarity Springs Wellness Advisors is proud to announce a significant expansion of our holistic therapy programming at our addiction treatment center in Arleta, California. Effective this month, patients enrolled in our residential treatment and outpatient programs now have access to an enhanced suite of holistic and experiential therapies designed to complement our evidence-based clinical treatment and support whole-person healing. These new offerings reflect our ongoing commitment to providing the most comprehensive, individualized addiction treatment available in the San Fernando Valley.

Why Holistic Therapies Matter in Addiction Recovery

Addiction affects every dimension of a person's life: physical, emotional, psychological, social, and spiritual. While evidence-based clinical therapies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and medication-assisted treatment (MAT) form the foundation of effective addiction treatment, research increasingly demonstrates that holistic therapies play a vital complementary role in supporting lasting recovery.

A growing body of peer-reviewed research supports the integration of holistic modalities into substance abuse treatment. Studies published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology, the Journal of Addiction Medicine, and Complementary Therapies in Medicine have documented measurable benefits including reduced anxiety and depression symptoms, decreased physiological stress markers, improved emotional regulation and distress tolerance, enhanced self-awareness and mindfulness, reduced cravings and substance use, and improved treatment retention and completion rates.

At Clarity Springs Wellness Advisors, we view holistic therapies not as alternatives to clinical treatment but as essential components of a comprehensive, individualized care plan. Our philosophy is rooted in the understanding that sustainable recovery requires healing the whole person, not merely addressing the symptoms of addiction.

New Programs: What We Are Offering

Our enhanced holistic therapy programming at the Arleta campus includes the following new and expanded offerings:

Trauma-Informed Yoga Therapy: Our new yoga therapy program is led by certified yoga therapists trained in trauma-sensitive instruction. Unlike standard yoga classes, trauma-informed yoga is specifically designed for individuals who have experienced trauma, which is prevalent among those with substance use disorders. Sessions emphasize breath awareness, gentle movement, body reconnection, and mindfulness, all in a safe, non-triggering environment. Patients participate in yoga therapy three times per week during residential treatment and have optional sessions available during PHP and IOP.

Mindfulness Meditation and MBSR: We have expanded our meditation programming to include a structured Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) curriculum. Developed at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, MBSR has been extensively studied and shown to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression while improving emotional regulation, qualities that are particularly valuable during early recovery from addiction. Patients progress through an eight-week MBSR program that includes guided meditation, body scan exercises, mindful movement, and group discussion.

Art Therapy: Our new art therapy program is facilitated by a licensed, board-certified art therapist who guides patients through creative exercises designed to process emotions, explore identity, express difficult experiences, and develop new coping mechanisms. Art therapy is especially valuable for patients who struggle to articulate their feelings verbally, a common experience during early recovery. Mediums include painting, drawing, sculpture, collage, and mixed media. No artistic experience or talent is required.

Music Therapy: Led by a board-certified music therapist, our new music therapy program uses evidence-based music interventions including songwriting, lyric analysis, drumming circles, and guided listening exercises. Research has shown that music therapy can reduce anxiety, improve mood, enhance motivation for treatment, and strengthen interpersonal connections, all within the context of a creative, engaging group experience.

Equine-Assisted Therapy (Partnered Program): Through a partnership with a licensed equine-assisted therapy provider near our Arleta location, patients now have the opportunity to participate in weekly equine-assisted therapy sessions. Working with horses in a guided therapeutic context promotes self-awareness, emotional regulation, boundary setting, and trust building. Equine-assisted therapy has shown particular promise for patients with trauma histories, attachment difficulties, and co-occurring mental health conditions.

Nature-Based Therapy and Guided Outdoor Activities: Taking advantage of Southern California's natural beauty, our expanded programming includes guided hikes, outdoor mindfulness walks, and nature-based therapeutic exercises. Exposure to natural environments has been shown to reduce cortisol levels, lower blood pressure, improve mood, and enhance cognitive function. These outdoor activities also provide opportunities for physical exercise, social connection, and a sense of adventure that supports engagement in the recovery process.

How Holistic Therapies Are Integrated Into Treatment Plans

At Clarity Springs Wellness Advisors, holistic therapies are not offered as standalone activities or optional extras. They are intentionally integrated into each patient's individualized treatment plan by our clinical team. During the initial assessment process, our therapists and counselors identify each patient's unique needs, preferences, and treatment goals. Based on this assessment, specific holistic modalities are incorporated alongside evidence-based clinical therapies to create a comprehensive, balanced treatment experience.

For example, a patient in our residential program who is recovering from opioid addiction and also managing PTSD might have a treatment plan that includes individual EMDR therapy, group CBT, medication management, trauma-informed yoga therapy twice weekly, art therapy once weekly, and daily mindfulness meditation. Another patient recovering from alcohol use disorder with co-occurring depression might participate in individual CBT, DBT skills group, music therapy, guided outdoor activities, and the MBSR program.

Available Across All Levels of Care

Our enhanced holistic therapy programming is available to patients at every level of care within our continuum. Residential treatment patients have the most extensive access, with holistic modalities scheduled throughout the weekly program. Patients in our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) participate in holistic sessions as part of their daily programming. Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) patients have access to select holistic offerings, and our alumni program includes ongoing holistic wellness workshops and events.
